Ulster MuseumPart of the National Museums and Galleries of Northern Ireland (MAGNI), the Ulster Museum is located in the Botanical Gardens in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and features exhibits from its collections of Fine and Applied Art, Archaeology, Ethnography, Industrial Archaeology, Local History, Botany, Zoology and Geology, as well as artworks and artifacts salvaged from the Spanish Armada. In Autumn 2006, the Ulster museum closed its doors for three years to facilitate a £12m refurbishment financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. |

Fine Art Since the 1940s, the Ulster Museum has assembled an excellent collection of art by modern Irish artists, including numerous Northern Irish painters. In addition, the Fine Art collection contains a host of artworks by UK and international artists, created in a wide variety of styles and media. Among the highlights of the museum's international art collection are: portrait paintings by Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds; landscape masterpieces by J.M.W. Turner; a collection of Old Masters featuring pictures by Dutch, Flemish and Italian masters, including Jacob Jordaens and Pompeo Batoni. Among the highlights of the larger Irish and Ulster collection - dating from the late seventeenth century to the present day - are paintings by James Arthur O'Connor, the Irish Impressionist Roderic O'Conor, Walter Osborne, Sir John Lavery, John Luke and William Conor. |

In addition, the Ulster Museum includes numbers a variety of contemporary works of art among its collection, including works by notable artists like: Karel Appel, Jean Dubuffet, Francis Bacon and the sculptor Henry Moore. Other elements of the modern art collection include 'Colour Field' paintings by American artists Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and others, and works by UK artists Patrick Caulfield and the Op-Art expert Bridget Riley.
