Permanent Collection on Exhibition
The National Gallery of Ireland (NGI) houses the state's collection of
paintings, sculptures and drawings. There are more than 2,500 paintings
in the permanent collection by European and Irish artists. Irish artist
highlights include Self-Portrait as Timanthes (1780 by James Barry),
A Convent Garden, Brittany (1913, William John Leech), The Blind
Piper (1864, Joseph Patrick Haverty), A Piping Boy (John Camillus
Hone), The Artist's Son (1769, Nathaniel Hone I), The Dublin
Streets: A Vendor of Books (1889, Walter Frederick Osborne); as well
as modern artworks such as A Family (1951, Louis le Brocquy) and
The Singing Horseman (1949, Jack B Yeats). There is also a considerable
collection of European paintings: highlights include: The Taking of
Christ (1602, Caravaggio), Saints Cosmas and Damian and their Brothers
Surviving the Stake (1439, Fra Angelico), Portrait of Dona Antonia
Zarate (1805, Francisco de Goya), Stella in a Flowered Hat
(1907, Kees van Dongen), Woman Writing a Letter with her Maid (1670,
Johannes Vermeer), and Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat
(1874, Claude Monet).

Permanent Collection On Exhibition
The National Museum of Ireland houses a collection of 4 million objects
and specimens, primarily from Ireland. The museum is spread across 3 locations
in Dublin and one in County Mayo. The Irish Archaeological collection,
which includes Celtic metalworks such as the Ardagh Chalice, Tara Brooch
and Derrynaflan Hoard, are housed in the History and Archaelogy section
in Kildare Street (Dublin 2). Decorative Arts & History, situated
at the Collins Barracks site, includes a wide range of objects including
swords, silver, furniture, glassware and ceramics. The Natural History
Museum, also part of the National Museum of Ireland and located on Merrion
Street, exhibits 2 million specimens from the animal kingdom around the
world. The Museum of Country Life, in Castlebar, in County Mayo, is home
to the national collection of objects representing the Irish traditional
way of life since 1850. This includes items created by wood turners, blacksmiths,
thatcher, basketmakers, cobblers and tinsmiths.

Self-Portrait Gallery, Limerick
Permanent Collection On Exhibition
Located in Limerick University, the National Portrait Gallery contains
about 400 self-portraits, mostly 2-dimensional (drawings and paintings)
although recent additions include multi-media. Highlights include oil
paintings by John Shinnors, William Leech, Niccolo d'Ardia Caracciolo
and Patrick Hennessy. Also, gouache paintings, including a self-portrait
by Melanie le Brocquy and pencil and ink sketch by Robert Ballagh. The
aim of the gallery is to display the portraits of the country's great
men and women, and to act as a facility of study of portraits and portraiture.

Chester
Beatty Library
Permanent Collection On Exhibition
Described by the Lonely Planet guidebook as one of the best museums in
Europe, the Chester Beatty Library is both a library and an art museum.
It houses a large collection of priceless manuscripts, prints, drawings,
miniature paintings, rare books and decorative arts. The collection was
assembled by Alfred Chester Beatty (1875-1968), from Europe, Asia and
the Middle East. Key works include illuminated manuscripts from medieval
and Renaissance Europe, copies of the Bible and the Qur'an and Egyptian
papyrus texts.

Lane Gallery
Permanent Collection on Exhibition
This gallery houses a permanent collection of modern and contemporary
Irish art and sculpture and stages regular art exhibitions. Painters represented
include Walter Osborne, William Orpen, Jack B Yeats, Sean Scully, Brian
Maguire as well as female artists Norah McGuinness, Mary Swanzy and Dorothy
Cross. In 2001 the gallery purchased the entire contents of Francis Bacon's
workshop and reinstalled it in the museum. European highlights include
La Musique aux Tuileries by Edouard Manet; Bains de Mer
by Edgar Degas; The Mantlepiece by Edouard Vuillard; and Lavacourt
under Snow by Claude Monet.
Temporary Exhibitions At The Hugh Lane
Gallery
Sean Scully Room
Contemporary artist Sean Scully gifted 7 large paintings to the gallery
in 2006. These were installed in a dedicated gallery in a new wing of
the building.
Stained Glass Room
This room is dedicated to stain glass artwork. The key work in the collection
is The Eve of St Agnes by Harry Clarke. Other artists represented
include Evie Hone, Paul Bony, James Scanlon and Wilhelmina Geddes.

Museum of Modern Art
Permanent Collection On Exhibition
The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) houses the country's collection
of modern and abstract art. Established in 1990, the permanent collection
comprises 4,500 works which have been purchased, donated or are on long-term
loan. The museum's focus is to concentrate on the work of living artists,
although it has some historical pieces from the 1940s onwards. It has
paintings by Tony O'Malley, Barrie Cooke, Sean Scully, Cecil King and
Basil Blackshaw; sculptures by Louise Bourgeois, James McKenna and Dorothy
Cross; and avant garde film installations by Neil Jordan.

Gallagher Gallery
The Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), located
in Ely Place in Dublin has 5 galleries dedicated to contemporary and modern
Irish and international art. The Ashford Gallery is situated on the first
floor and is available to artists without representation in Dublin and
is designed to introduce lesser known artists to the public. The ground
floor is home to the Tony Ryan Gallery, which is used for displaying private
and public collections. Every year the RHA hosts the prestigious RHA annual
exhibition. Half of the works exhibited are selected through an open submission
process which means emerging artists have a chance to be shown alongside
established RHA members like Liam Belton, Pauline Bewick, Martin Gale
and Eilis O'Connell.

Permanent Collection On Exhibition
Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, Trinity College is the country's
oldest university. Its library holds millions of books, including numerous
collections of rare manuscripts. Popular displays in the library include
copies of the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic, read aloud
in 1916 at the start of the Easter Rising by Patrick Pearse, and the Book
of Kells (c.800), one of the worlds best surviving examples
of illuminated manuscripts from early Christian art. Other important examples
of monastic Irish art include the Book of Dimma (c.625) and the
Book of Durrow (c.670). Temporary exhibitions are held in the Douglas
Hyde Gallery, part of the college campus.

Museum, Limerick
Permanent Collection On Exhibition
The Hunt Museum houses a collection of fine art, decorative art and antiquities.
There are artifacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Olmec civilisation.
Also, Neolithic flints and Bronze Age tools from Ireland such as a Bronze
Age cauldron and shield. There are religious artifacts such as the 9th
century Antrim Cross. Also represented are 19th century silver, glass
and ceramics as well as works by artists Roderic O'Connor, Jack B Yeats,
Henry Moore and Robert Fagan, as well as the French Impressionist Auguste
Renoir.

Located in the Botanical Gardens in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the Ulster
Museum features exhibits from its collections of Fine and Applied Art,
